Self Love – And Why You Should Practice it Everyday!♥
Hi Dear Readers!♥
These past few years the practice and topic of self love has been on a steady uprise. We as a collective are slowly becoming aware that it is the fewest of us who can handle the constant grind which the current world structure demands of us, that doesn’t leave much time to take care of ourselves. Side note; Since this is a topic I’m very passionate about, I have made another post addressing the Issues of Performance Society. Feel free to check it out! And since self love hasn’t necessarily been a common practice, it may be a bit confusing to understand what Self Love exactly is. So, in this post I will be giving my take on what it is as well as some easy ideas to how you could include more self love in your daily life.
Remember, since this post is written purely on personal experience, only take what resonates with you from this post and leave the rest. You are on your own journey, and only you know what the best for yourself is. !!This Post is NOT Sponsored!!
What is Self Love?♥
Self Love can be a bit of a fluffy size. What does self love entail? Is there a recipe; a step-by-step guide on how to achieve self love? Just like anything else in the world, self love is very subjective, as we all have different needs. My definition of self love is to take time out of your day to do something nice for yourself that makes you feel good, at peace, confident, loved, etc.. Meeting our own needs essentially.
Living in a world that is as busy as ours, we often forget to take care of ourselves. We become lost in deadlines, commitments, responsibilities, and such.
I have found that taking time out of my day to do something I love has almost become a chore, because it takes time away from the things, I feel like I “Need” to do. But I also think that comes from the narrative that we NEED to do the sour things first (studying, work, etc..) to ‘earn’ having fun afterwards. The point I want to make here, is that if we want to perform in all these aspects of our lives, we need to take some time to recharge our own batteries. And sometimes that means doing what’s fun first! And it is here self love enters the picture.
Conscious Self Love – Ideas♥
If you are fairly new in the game of Self Love I figured I would include a small list in comprehensive bites about how I started my conscious self love journey. I am by no means an expert in this field, but hopefully you will be inspired to take care of your own needs.
Daily Meditation♥
Meditation has, from the time of writing this post, been a fairly new addition to my Self-Love toolbox. I’ve been doing it every day for about a week now. Not only is meditation awesome for giving yourself time to slow down and feeling a sense of calm, but I have also personally noticed it is absolutely awesome for anxiety as well. Since a ‘symptom’ of anxiety can be racing thought and general overthinking, meditation is almost the best ‘medicine’. Meditation removes focus from our thoughts and move it down into our body and breath.
Energy Protection♥
To make sure that my energy is not completely drained halfway through the day, I do something I call Energy Protection. Everyday, either before or after my meditation, I do a visualization exercise and affirmations. These allow me to protect my energy throughout the day. Depending on the intensity of the day, I repeat these exercises and affirmations if needed. If we take care of ourselves first, we suddenly have much more to give to the world.
Becoming Aware of Negative Self Talk♥
Talking poorly to or about ourselves is something a lot of people do either consciously or unconsciously. In Denmark it is almost expected that we talk ourselves down, to not seem better than the people around us. The infamous “Jantelov”. But toxic societal structures should not prevent us from building ourselves up. What many don’t realize is that our focus/thoughts become our reality. So, if we constantly tell ourselves that we aren’t good enough, or we’ll never get our dream job, etc., then that becomes our reality = our truth.
So, for about a year now, I’ve tried to become more aware of my inner monologue. Whenever I catch myself thinking draining or negative thoughts about myself, I stop op and kindly redirect to a more uplifting and kinder thought pattern. Don’t you beat yourself up over not catching every negative thought you have. That kind of defeats the purpose. Just let your thoughts flow, and whenever you notice a draining though, simply redirect.
Just Dance♥
The beautiful thing is that the thing your do for yourself can be of any magnitude or ‘significance’. The main things that I do for myself are to a large extend spiritually oriented, but I also appreciate the simple approach, for instance Just Dance. With this I mean the game as well as just letting go and dance to your heart’s content. It also good to get some physical movement, and I can’t thing of a more fun way than this. On a more personal note, I’ve found that dancing is one of the best ways for me to cope with my anxiety. It removes focus from my thoughts to the music and choreography. If you struggle with anxiety, give it a try.
Take Feelings Seriously
Sometimes we can bash ourselves for feeling er certain way. That can be many things. Like feeling angry in a situation where you don’t feel like you are allowed to feel angry, being sad over the death of a pet, frustration over not landing that promotion. In my opinion, nothing says Self Love than taking our own feelings seriously no matter what they might be.
A way to do that is using essential oil. I personally use essential oils daily, particularly for supporting my anxiety, but also general human emotions, such as the ones mentioned above. See my post about 10 Essential Oils for Anxiety if it’s something you struggle with.
