DIY Love Jar – Mother’s Day Gift Edition
DIY Love Jar
Hi Dear Readers and welcome to this DIY Love Jar – Mother’s Day Edition Tutorial. When reading the title of this post, you may think that it is a little late. In Denmark Mother’s Day is May 8th, but there is a very specific reason for the “late posting”. The DIY shown in this post is actually the exact gift I was giving my mom, and I only had time to give it to her the weekend after the actual Mother’s Day. So, it was simply to not spoil her present ahead of time. Please bear with me.
This Love Jar is not exclusively for mother’s or Mother’s Day. It is also a Love Jar you can make for yourself, other family, or friends.
Step by Step Guide:
1. Choose your Jar
Depending on the number of pieces of paper you wish to include in your Love Jar, you should choose a jar accordingly. It does however need to be a jar that you can easily retrieve your notes again; so, either one that is big enough for a hand or can be ‘poured’ from. You can with benefit look for your jar at a second-hand store or flea market for close to no money. I personally decided on a jar I had saved from a butter chicken dinner that was in it. The jar doesn’t need to be expensive as it’s the content that is the most important.
Be sure to clean and dry your jar thoroughly before putting it to use, particularly if it has been used for food before, so your notes won’t be damaged. If there were stickers on the jar, you should be able to easily remove them with some hot water and soap.
2. Prepare your Notes
Here you can really do whatever you want. You can just use normal white paper, or if you want your notes to have categories, you can color code them, so they are easy to tell apart from the others. You can probably find some perfectly sized pieces of paper at your local office article store. If that is not an option, you can do like me, and cut some paper you already have, to size. Here I have settled on some post-it-note-sized paper and cut them into 3 equal parts.
If you want your loved one or yourself to enjoy this for a year, you can decide on creating 365 notes, one for each day. You can really settle on any number, for instance if there is a number that is significant to you. Age, number of countries you have travelled to, number of days in your birthday month. I decided on 105 notes, because I though that was a cute number, like; “105 reasons I love you”.
3. Pick Content and Write your Notes
What really makes the Love Jar what it is, is what is written on your notes. You can pick a theme or just let your heart control your pen. If you want to include some categories in your jar I’ve come up with a few suggestions. There are of course many other options than just these, so if you have just the right theme in mind, feel free to go with that:
-
-
- “Reasons I Love You”
- “Quotes and Lyrics”
- “Memories and Special Moments”
- “Words of encouragement”
- “Things we should do Together”
- “Why I Admire you”
-
If you have chosen to use categories, you need to divide your notes out on each category. I personally think it’s nice to have an equal number of notes for each category.
Now you need to write out your notes. Do you know exactly what you want to write? Just start writing to your hearts content. But if you struggle to find the right words, there are plenty of inspiration on google. There are also many suggestions on what to write based on the categories I’ve included above. You can include quotes and/or lyrics that you or your loved one loves. Or you could point out some nice memories you have together. They may be going through a rough time; write some words of encouragement to let them know that you support them and think of them. In reality what you write doesn’t need to be perfect. What is important is that the receiver feels the love and effort you have put into this Love Jar. And by the sheer fact that you choose to take time to create this, will already make them feel loved and appreciated.
4. Decorate your Jar
You can of course decide to keep your jar simple and leave it as it is if that is what you prefer. But you can also shine it up a little more with some decorations. Here are some suggestions as to what you can decorate your Jar with:
-
-
- Paint your jar with paint that can be used on glass
- Tie a ribbon around the top
- Cut outs of photo of you and the receiver
- Put stickers on it
- Tape dried flowers around the jar
-
If you aren’t personally giving your loved one this jar, you can write a little guide on how to use the jay on the. And if you have used categories as well, it would be a good idea to include an overview, so the receiver knows which notes belong to each category.
