Student Burnout – How to get your Motivation Back!♥

Hi Dear Readers!

When deciding to get a degree and dedicating multiple years of your life to being a student, for most, it is not a smooth ride all the time. It is very normal to hit bumps on the way. Feeling uncertain if you made the right choice. Struggling financially. Maybe collecting a lot of debt. Having to retake exams. It is not easy. And because of that, many people experience burnout with their studies, maybe multiple times. But it is not the end of the world. I have personally experienced burnout with my studies and have had to make some pretty tough decision due to that. So, I though I’d give you guys some tips to reignite your passion for your studies and get your motivation back. Student Burnout – How to get your Motivation Back

Remember, this post is written purely on personal experience. Only take what resonates with you from and leave the rest. You are on your own journey, and only you know what the best for yourself is.

Ask Yourself:

What could be the reason for your burnout? Did your studies turn out to be different than you expected? Do you struggle to fit in socially? Is the workload too big? When I experienced burnout with my first studies after my 1st semester, I was completely over it. I didn’t vibe with some members of my study group. I had completely exhausted myself trying to make it work. So much so, that my interest in the course completely vanished. After I had swapped my studies, I found out that if I had just gotten a new study group, I might’ve stayed on the course. So do yourself a favour and consider why you may be experiencing burnout. Is it an easily fixable problem, or do you need some help from a student counsellor?

Remind Yourself Why You Started Your Studies

A very simple thing you could do to get your excitement for your studies back is to just remind yourself why you chose your degree in the first place. Maybe it has been your dream since you were a kid. Perhaps it gives you awesome job opportunities. Or maybe it will allow you to make a difference in the world. Whatever the reason, big or small, it may be all you need to feel happy with your choice again.

Revisit Your Schedule

Maybe the reason for your burnout could be overburdening yourself. Then the best thing you could do is take a look at how you have been scheduled your studies or prioritized your commitments. I have many times during my studies revisited my weekly plan and tweaked it here and there. To give an example, I found after having been a university for some time, that having to do schoolwork in the weekends didn’t work for me. I felt like I never had any free time, and I was just studying to no end. Then I took a look at the weekly schedule I had made, that included an entire breakdown of the commitments I had during the week. I rescheduled some of my preparation hours, so I would study a bit longer during the weekdays, but in return have my weekends free.

That gave me a greater sense of balance between my studies and the other parts of my life, which made even more motivated to do well in my studies. If you would like some tips on how to structure your time better, check out my blog post on How to Sustainably Structure Your Time as a Student!

Engage in the Social Life on Campus

Establishing a connection with your school life, that is something other than just studying, can make your entire studying experience more enjoyable. Engage with your fellow students, arrange after school gatherings, create a study group, etc.. When you are going through a rough patch, it is good that you associate some positive things with your studies as well.

Engaging with Your Fellow Students.

Other than hanging out with your course mates at campus, you can create online groups where you can engage with each other as well. Since the course I was attending at university was so small, we created a Discord group (Sort of like a Facebook group), where we gathered everything that was relevant to our studies. We had a Study Chat, an Event Chat, Voice Chats, and General Chats where we could discuss and talk about all sorts of topics. In these chats we could help each other with our studies, arrange meetups, hang out while studying on a voice call, or motivate each other. Having a good social life whilst studying, will make going through the tough times a lot easier.

Create a Study Group.

Now, it can very well be a possibility that you have already been divided into study groups at your school (We did at mine). If you weren’t, create your own! A study group is a small group of people, of maybe a max. of 5 people, where you help each other with your studies. This can be doing projects together, help each other keeping track of deadlines, sparring for exams and the like. Some people like to do other activities in their groups as well, such as cooking dinner together (Which can be very cost efficient when being a student with little to no income).

Look into Events on Campus.

Many universities and colleges arrange events at their campus. This could be parties, guest lectures, concerts, clubs, etc.. This point kind of goes with the same tune as the other ideas above. You can get a break from studying, have a good time or perhaps learn something new. Create some positive experiences with your studies that will motivate you to push through the hard times.

Reconsider Choice of Studies…

Even though it is tough, it is a very real possibility that your current studies haven’t lived up to your expectations. A certain degree can sound super interesting, but actually making it your choice of education can be completely different thing. As humans, we make mistakes all the time, and it’s important to remind ourselves that it’s okay. If your first choice of studies disappointed, just look into changing your major or degree/course. In worst case scenario, you would have to take a break year (a year where you get a job and focus on work or travel). In that time, you could make some nice savings or have experienced some amazing things on your travels.
