10 Self-Care Ideas for Students!♥

Hi Dear Readers!

After nearly 3 years where the world has been turned upside down, and we all have been affected in one way or another, it is extremely important to look after ourselves. Selfcare can look very different from person to person, also depending on which resources we have. Being a student myself, I know the need to have to be cautious about the money I have. That is why I have created this list with 10 Self-care ideas for students that are either inexpensive or free. Selfcare should not be a luxury. Luckily when it comes to practicing selfcare, it’s often the most simple and inexpensive solutions the works the best!

Remember, only take what resonates with you from this post and leave the rest. You are on your own journey, and only you know what the best for yourself is.

1. Take care of your spirituality.♥

This step can be quite intricate one, as spirituality can be many various things, also depending on how far you are in your journey. But some of these activities could include meditation, yoga, deep breaths, or journaling. These you can literally do in any amount of time throughout the day. If you have 5 minutes in between meetings, or on the bus on your way to school, you can prioritize a 3-minute meditation or 1 minute of deep breaths.

2. Organize your commitments.♥

Without realizing it, a lot of energy can go into trying to keep track of all of our commitments. Especially nowadays we promise ourselves to sometimes too many parties, and we through that forget to take care of our needs. A good way to minimize that stress is to organize our commitments. These commitments can be anything: School, work, hobbies, café visits, friends, concerts, parties, cleaning, voluntary/charity work, etc. When you create an overview of all of the things you whish/need to spend your time on, you start to relax as you are not afraid of forgetting something. There are many ways of which you can do this. Some people like a physical calendar, others prefer a daily planner.

3. Pamper-yourself-evening.♥

Something that really says selflove, is doing something that makes you feel good. One of my preferred ways of doing that is taking a nice warm shower or bath. Put on your favorite chill playlist, light a bunch of candles, and then just go soak in the shower or tub. When you are done, take some time to do your skincare and/or haircare routine. Whilst you are looking in the bathroom mirror, say some nice words to yourself. Give yourself a compliment. You don’t have to say it out loud, just saying it in your mind is enough.

4. Go for a LONG walk.♥

If you have had a long week at work or been nose-deep in your study book until late in the evening, some fresh air and exercise might be just what you need. Pack a light lunch, fill a bottle of water, and just go for a long walk. Look up good hiking or walking routes in your area, maybe some you haven’t tried yet. Take your time and give yourself the gift of letting your mind rest and just enjoy yourself. Additionally, you could invite a good friend with you. Take a 1-minute break Selfcare does not have to be anything big or something that requires a lot of effort. It can be something as simple taking a minute to yourself and just breathe. Everyday life can be quite busy, and we sometimes forget to give ourselves a breather. Being constantly fed information whether that being through work, studies, social media, friends, family, etc. can be taxing in the long run.

5. Traditional Movie night.♥

Sometimes all you need is just to snuggle up in your coziest blanket, make a cup of tea have your favorite candies next to you and watch a good movie. Is a nice way to relax and have fun. Going for some old classics, Disney movies or a comforting series like Friends, are great, because then your mind doesn’t need to work that hard to keep up with the plot. To make it extra cozy put on your fluffiest sock and comfy PJs.

6. Go Second Hand Shopping.♥

Even as a student, it is nice to get some new clothes every once in a while. And even better save some money whole doing it. A misconception about second-hand shopping, is that its only old people who shop that kind of thing and most of the clothes is in poor quality anyway. Although elderly people also shop second-hand, many other people do it as well. And even though some of the clothes has seen better days, you can easily find new clothes that’s never been worn and maybe even designer goods. But why stop at clothing, you can find furniture and decorative items as well to a fraction of the price. If you are the artistic type or want a bit of a challenge you can also upcycle second-hand items. Maybe even make a bit of money while doing it.

7. Dress to Impress… Yourself!♥

Putting effort into yourself and the things you like is NOT snobby or selfish! When you put effort into yourself, you remind yourself that you are worth it. You are worthy of feeling and looking beautiful and handsome. Wear your favorite dress, suit, shirt, pants, socks, ring, whatever it is! It doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks, the point is to make yourself feel good in your own skin. So, if there is a dress hanging in your closet you haven’t worn yet because it “too daring” or a shirt that is “too out there”, put it on a slay that outfit! You can’t control what people think of you, so may as well do what feels right to you. You could maybe try out the second-hand outfit you just bought!

8. Treat Your Second Heart (Your Stomach).♥

Now food can be a sensitive subject for some, and this list is not trigger anybody. So, if you know you have certain reservations towards the topic of food, please feel free to skip this point. I am no doctor or a dietitian, so remember to consult with your own health professional.

It is really important that we remember to give our body the nourishment that it needs to function well. So, when I write treat yourself with food, I do not necessarily mean one type of food rather than the other. But there are some foods that just make you feel good, meaning if one day that is a piece of pie and the other day it is roasted vegetables, you should do what your body tells you. Whether you have a tough relationship with food or not, take some time to put some effort into your meals.

9. Hobby it up!♥

Often getting lost in all the ‘official’ stuff we need to take care of, such as work or homework, we sometimes forget to spend time on the things we want to do purely for the fun of it. It is a misconception, that you need to sit hours on end, trying to finish up an assignment or project. Truth is, that you are probably only being productive a fraction of the time. So instead of beating yourself up over not just finishing writing that page, take for instance an hour out of your day to prioritize one of your hobbies. That way you will feel motivated and refreshed to continue working.

10. Do Nothing.♥

Now this point may sound a bit weird, as when doing self-care invites you to do something active. But when we live as busy lives as we do, it can sometimes be hard to determine what our bodies actually need. So, making the conscious choice to do nothing, can allow you to pinpoint exactly what it is your body needs. When you are sitting in absolute quietness with no stimulation in terms of music, social media, etc., you are being forced to feel and listen to your body. This can be a quite intense experience if you haven’t tried it before. But apart from using this in selfcare, you can utilize this exercise in any aspect of your life. “Should I take this job or not?”, “Do I eat the chocolate or gummi bears first?”, “Should I …”, you get the idea.
